[MR] Passing of a Legend

I remember Froggy well. (So nicknamed by some for the common description of
him as "The Frog Prince".)

He was one of the finalists in the first Meridian Crown Tourney which was my
first Crown. (John Bearkiller was the winner.) And I well remember his
coronation which was held at the statehouse in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. (The
Society was allowed to camp on the grounds and we were told that it was the
first time that had happened since the Union Army had occupied Baton Rouge.
And I well remember going down to that event with a side trip to pick up
people from Mississippi State. We had four people in my notchback Vega with
the HEAVY thrones of Meridies on the roof rack because the Meridian regalia
trailer had died shortly before Coronation.)

I have to admit, though, that my memories of him were of the young, dark,
relatively slim fighter who could pull off mighty leaps in the air.
(Another reason he was called the Frog Prince!) The older figure in the
admittedly romantic photograph on the web site would never represent
François to me!

And I do wish that the site had spelled his name right: du Vent (of the
wind) for in his younger days that well described him.

part of Atenveldt. . .

On June 8th the SCA and the Kingdom of Meridies lost one of its shinning
stars.

Sir Francois Du Vant

Francois was knighted in 1974 by Robert Roundpowder King of Atenveldt and
was the first Prince of Meridies and their fourth King. He was the epitome
of all that was great in the SCA. I was lucky to get to know him and his
lovely wife. He was a teacher a friend and someone I looked up to. Someone

I strived to emulate. I may never reach that star that is Francois but I
will never stop trying. God Bless and keep him.

Those who knew may want to go the web site Meridies has set up to honor him.

There you can post your thought and recollections of him.

Those who have never met the individual I beg of you go to this site and see

one of the main reasons the SCA flourishes.
