I suspect this should be "strong lie that will beare
AN egg..." as floating an egg is a sign your potash
solution has reached  full potency (assuming you're
making your own by dripping water through ashes).

Pretty cool, because I don't think I've seen the
floating egg thing appear in writing this early...
