As far as the myth of Atlantis... it has continued to enchant and mystify because many islands have some evidence to prove the myth true. Santorini (ancient Thira), has ruins on the main island that authenticate the possibility of an advanced society. The buildings and frescoes are amazing, more advanced than anything of that time. In approx. 1600 BCE, a volcano erupted wiping this settlement off the map. The island was round, but now has only 3 islands forming a ring around a center of water, because the center of the land sunk in. Standing on the cliffs of the main island in Fira, you can well imagine that civilization plummeting into the sea and writing itself into legend. My professor, until the day he died, was convinced this island was the Atlantis of legend. Other islands have evidence supposedly proving their case, but my money is on Santorini and the ruins at Akrotiri.
