My Good Sir Richard, I can assure you, as can any who have sailed to
and around the Cape of Good Hope and visited our cousins in Adamaster
or other southern realms, that Orion and his belt are well and truly
visible in the far south. Though, I will admit, his aspect there takes
one a while to become familiar with, as he is standing on his head; a
most undignified position for one armed with sword and shield, though
he holds it with great ease.
(Orion lies south of the ecliptic and the signs of the Zodiac, and so
is easily visible in the south. If one sought a northern constellation
or other distinctive stellar grouping, Cassiopeia would be a good
choice, with her stars in their very distinctive 'w' pattern, though
Cygnus and Lyra are not bad. The great Plough (or dipper, as some call
it) is easily the best known, but also more used.)
