[MR] Period transportation didn't need gasoline

You know, interesting enough, here in Europe, even the very oldest, most
decrepit looking people I have ever seen in my life ride their bikes two
kilometers each way to go to the store, rather than drive; if it is only one
kilometer each way, those same really old people walk instead of even taking
the bike...Of course, when one pays $5-6 per gallon for gas (75% of that is
taxes), then one can understand why. But you know, you see many fewer
overweight Germans than you do overweight Americans. One problem I noticed
when I was back in America in August, however, was a lack of nice walking
paths to get places--- most University campuses excepted. If you leave the
residential areas, there are no places but the shoulder of the road to walk
on. But there are plenty of beautifully, broad highways....

<<Or bike... not period, but still, better than using gas! We actually took
our bikes down from the attic this evening, and will be repairing/fitting
them to be usable for small errands around town. Fortunately, our town is
small enough to do that in!

A side benefit... I ought to get into better shape, too. :)
