Due to some computer problems, the knitting track was not included in the
Acorn listing of classes, but we are on the web page. Just as a reminder,
here are the knitting classes to be offered in October, hope to see you
there. :-)
Thank you,
Susanna
Clewe Keepers Knitting Track October, 2005 University
1. History of Knitting - Susanna von Schweissguth. Well take a look at
medieval knitted pieces to see what techniques, fibers and designs were used
in the beautiful art form.
2. Beginning Knitting - Katherine Luvell. Students should leave class able
to cast on, knit, purl and cast off, having had time in class to actively
practice each activity. Handouts will be provided as a reminder of the
techniques taught. As time allows, will include experimentation with
knitting in the round on circular needles and double pointed needles and the
chance to look at some of the better resources on medieval knitting. Class
size limited to 10. Supplies for class: You may bring your own or purchase
from the instructor at time of class. Supplies available will be size 8
double pointed or single pointed bamboo needles and Patons classic wool
merino yarn. Costs should be less than $15, including copy costs for
handouts. Class length: hours
3. Knitting Tips and Techniques - Susanna von Schweissguth. There are
some ways to make your knitting go more quickly and smoothly. Bring your
questions and problems, and well spend an hour looking at ideas to make
everyones knitting time more enjoyable.
4. Stranded Knitting - Instructor: Lord Tristan de Brailesford. This class
will teach the period art of stranded knitting. Topics covered will include:
graphing a design, adding a strand to a piece of work and ending a strand.
Each class participant should know how to knit, cast-on, cast-off and purl,
as related skills will not be covered. Also each class participant should
bring with them 2 colors of yarn that gauge well on needles of size four and
down as well as the respective needles they plan to use. Larger needles can
be used but are not recommended by the instructor. Knitting in the round is
allowed while participating in the class. Each participant should come to
class with a cast on row plus at least four rows of stockinette stitch.
Participants knitting in the round should cast on 66 stitches while those
not should cast on 33 stitches. The pattern that will be used in the class
will be one of Spike, so the colors should be appropriate to the pattern.
5. Knitting to a Period Gauge - Ynes Garcia. This class combines an
overview of the gauges of some representative extant knitted items from
pre-1600 Europe with an opportunity to fondle and knit a few stitches on
items in similar gauges and materials. This class contains no knitting
instruction and is open to all with no limit. One hour.
6. Intermediate Fingerloop Braiding: Departed Bowes - Ynes Garcia. This
class introduces the concept of working with two colors in one loop.
Students will learn two methods of making departed bowes and how this color
change works with 3 and 5 loop braids. Students should be able to make a
5-loop round pursestring before taking this class. Limit 10. One hour.
