The Library of Congress has a web page devoted to book and phot
preservation. http://www.loc.gov/preserv/presfaq.html

They discuss both what to do in the case of mold and mildew. Their advice
boils down to dry it out, preferably outside but out of the sun and to keep
it as dry as possible afterwards.  The smell should fade with time.
