[MR] Websites for Pelicans, Laurels, Proteges and Apprentices

Gentles,

I applaud that lists of peers and their students are in the works. I
would strongly suggest, though, that these sites have another, very
strong, primary focus on getting willing patrons together with willing
students.

I know at least one prospective apprentice who would have welcomed such
a site, particularly if it included an easier way to find a Laurel
willing to take on an apprentice. When this person asked, not only did
there see to be none that she knew willing or able to take her on, but
also no one seemed to be able to tell her where to go to find out who
could. The process in Atlantia of how one becomes a protege or
apprentice seems at least as fuzzy to those outside it as information
on the art or service for which given peer received his or her peerage,
as mentioned in some of the answers to Baroness Sunniva. At best, it
could be very discouraging. Last I knew, the SCA tries to promote
ENcouragement.<grin>

For lack of a more period description, this strong, primary focus might
amount to a list of "Patron Wanted" or "Willing Patron in [insert
subject here] Available" classified ads online. Lots of very skilled
artisans out there don't have the stainless-steel confidence in
themselves or their work necessary to find out to whom to go for this
just by schmoozing or personal networking. A clear, easily available
central clearinghouse for that information would help them
tremendously.

Yours in service,
Darri Kveldulfsson, Seneschal, Abhainn an Iar
