Yes, the little men in the hills were playing ninepins. In total silence and with no apparent pleasure.
 
He fell asleep when he had a drink from the keg he had helped the one little man carry to the group.
 
The story starts apparently in the 1750's or so to start, because Rip slept through the Revolutionary War.
