I hate to say it, but it's not really Cambok without the sticks, but as Guinievre pointed out, it was probably a good thing that cambok sticks weren't involved in this particular mudbath.
The game was invented by Sir Daffyd ap Gwystl in the early 90's. He's a Canadian expatriot who was missing his hockey. He researched similar games in period and made a bunch of cambok sticks (we still have ours). The lst cambok game (with sticks) that I personally witnessed was in Elvegast at the (1st?) Jongleurie in something like 1996.
Cheers,

You know, this is the first evidence I've seen of the game actually being
played!
For a long time I thought it was a sort of "SCAdian urban legend."
Are the rules (I assume there are *some* basic rules) anywhere published, or are
they entirely vernacular?
Your servant aye,

Greetings!
Though I didn't get any good pictures of court or the like, I did manage to
take a bunch of shots of the Cambok game in the mud - if anyone is
interested, they can be found at
http://pics.livejournal.com/lady_guenievre/gallery/00008hra .
Enjoy!

Lady Guenièvre de Monmarché
