9-10am:

A Bliaut: The controversial garment of the 12th century.

Location: Bathhouse. Teacher: Lady Louise de La Mare, Heather Benedict,

http://www.geocities.com/louise_de_la_mare/, ladylouise at carolina.rr.com.

Did you watch Aeowen standing on the hill at Edoras, in The Two Towers, with her hair blowing in the breeze & fall in love with her gown? Do you look at Edmund Blair Leighton's The Accolade & wish you had that dress? Discover the historical basis for these garments, the bliaut. The bliaut, in many variations, was worn through out much of western Europe. This class will focus primarily on the bliaut as seen in France with a few references from other countries. Discuss the theories & questions behind the construction & a period solution to these dilemmas. Learn some of the questions you should ask when considering fabrics & choosing materials for this dress. We will also briefly discuss hair & head coverings, as well as jewelry.

10-11am

Trebuchet (likely a 1/2 day class)

Location: Just outside the Bathhouse (but not pointed at it, please)

Teacher: Lord Wolfram Von Taus, Aric Benedict, lordwolfram at hotmail.com, http://www.geocities.com/wolfram_von_taus/

- This (beginners) class is intended to lay a foundation of medieval leverage artillery for students to take and build upon. It will by no means encompass everything there is to learn on the subject, & in fact will primarily focus on the counter ballast systems known as Trebuchet.
The course will be comprised of three main sections:
1. A brief history of leverage artillery up to the trigger of their decline. (30%)
2. Principles and theory surrounding their construction and use. (30%)
3. A lab where students are shown the principles in use on a scaled model. (40%)

10-11am

Chinese Clothing 101

Location: Bathhouse.

Teacher: Madonna Apollonia Margherita degli Albizzi, apollonia at bellsouth.net

Did you watch Hero this summer and see Flying Snow kick butt in her flowy silk outfit? Or how about the officials of the Emperor, dressed in black with the funny hats? Learn more about their clothing, and clothing from other dynasties during this class. There is no fee for handouts, but donations are welcome.

Middle Eastern Culture. Location: Bathhouse.

Teacher: Baroness Kisaiya Zingara, Dawn Davis, kisaiya at hotmail.com

Introduction to Support Spinning

Location: Bathhouse.

Teacher: Lady Lidia Lijovic de Ragusa, Lydia Leovic Towery, lkleovic at carolina.rr.com

Whether you are a beginner or accomplished with the drop spindle, come learn an alternative spinning technique. In contrast to drop spinning where the fiber is weighed down by spindle itself, support spindles are more effectively used for short or delicate fibers, like cotton, cashmere, and silk. Painted depictions of the use of supported spindle in use can be seen in period, such as the "Annunciation" in Speyer Cathedral in Germany. During this class, students will experiment with several different types of fiber. Cost: $8.00 with support spindle starter kit. Class size: 5

2-3pm

Intro to Card Weaving (2hours)
Location: Bathhouse.

Teacher: Countess Bera Thorbjarnardottir, Tracie Whitfield, bera at carolina.rr.com

Materials provided, Donations appreciated. Bring a modern belt with a good buckle or your very own loom. All students will go home with their first card woven piece. Limit 10. Observers welcome.

3-4pm

Lucet Beyond Basics

Location: Bathhouse.

Teacher: Lady Lidia Lijovic de Ragusa, Lydia Leovic Towery, lkleovic at carolina.rr.com

Bring your lucet and learn how to get more out of it. Besides making simple cord, the lucet can also be used to create flat trim, picoted or beaded trim, and multi-colored patterned cord. Techniques to make multi-colored cords with a double lucet will also be demonstrated. Cost: $2.00 handouts. Class size: 8
