Polar Bear Ball

December 18, 2004

With the frigid snows of winter beginning to blow, the Shire of
Crannog Mor would like to invite you to come warm yourself by our
fire, at the Polar Bear Ball. 

We have increased our activity offerings, so please read on, and see
what exciting events we have added to our day!

Cost: 

Adults  Day trip:  $5.00 Feast $8.00

Children (7-17)  Day Trip:  $5.00 Feast $5.00

Children under 6:   Guests of the Shire

Martial Activities: For heavy fighters we will have a 3 man Bear Pit
Tournament with extra points for Team Livery. Please contact the MIC
for further details regarding the fighting scenario, Baron Achbar ibn
Ali is the Marshal in Charge.  

Rapier Marshall will be Costanca Daquiar (jebeard at vt.edu).  

Remember fighters, you have an opportunity to spend the day fighting in
frostbite-free conditions!  

Arts and Sciences: For the less martially inclined, there will be an
open A&S Competition with a Winter theme. Extra points for best use
of the polar bear.

Contests: A silent contest is being sponsored, with a prize given to
the person who has traveled from farthest away.

Scroll Contest: Best Illuminated Letter. The scrolls do not need to
be finished, only the letter itself. Also it is encouraged that
participants pick an assignment from the Kingdom Backlog as an
entry. Documentation of period sources is encouraged. Sponsored by

Best Period Use of a Winter Herb: Sponsored by the Plinean Academy.

Bardic Competition: Perform all day long, while earning tokens from
your audience. The top three performers with the most tokens at the
beginning of feast, will be offered the chance to perform for the
High Table at Feast. The performer with the most tokens will win a
fine prize in addition to their chance to perform at feast. Ball
attendees will be given three tokens to bestow upon bards who dazzle
their eyes and ears throughout the day

Classes: 

An SCA Guide for Newcomers classes will be offered in the afternoon. 

Dance Classes will be offered in the afternoon, to focus on the dance
list for the after-dinner dancing.

Feast: A delectable feast, designed to warm your soul and tempt your

NC 28663. The site is strictly dry, no pets, no live steel, and no
smoking in buildings. Site opens at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and closes
at 12:00 a.m. Merchants are welcome please contact the autocrat for

Driving Directions: 

Directions from the SouthEast:

Take your best route to I-77, take Exit 83 on the left, which is Hwy
21 North to Sparta NC. Follow through town, road number will change
on other side of town, 21 will turn right, but you should remain
straight on US 221, turn right on Hwy 93, turn left on Pugh Road, go
to stop sign, cross HWY 113 onto Piney Creek School Road. School is
on left approximately 1 mile.

Directions from Southwest:

Take your best route to Hwy 421 East of Boone, at Hwy 221 Junction.
Follow HWY 221 North until you reach HWY 113, turn left on HWY 113,
turn Left again on Piney Creek School Road, School on left.

Directions from the North.

Take your best route to I-77 south. Take Exit 14, and turn right
towards Galax. Follow HWY 58 through Galax and Independence. After
passing through Independence, follow 58 until New River runs along
the left side of the road, take next right, HWY 93. Hwy 93 will bear
to the left, you should remain straight on HWY 113. Turn right onto
Piney Creek School Road.
