Due to a scheduling conflict the site has changed for Hero's Portion this weekend. The new site is SkyAnchor Campground, Which is just (figurativily) around the corner from Camp Pipsico. These are the updated directions, which should appear on our web page soon. Please cross-post this for widest distribution and I apologize to those who receive this multiple times due to that distribution.

>From Southside Hampton Roads

Make your best way to I-664 near the Suffolk/Chesapeake line. 

Take exit 9 from I-664 (US-17 and Hwy 164). 

Follow signs for Route 17 North and James River Bridge. 

Follow 17N (Bridge Rd) to the intersection of Hwy 32/258. 
You will cross Bennetts Creek, the Nansemond River, and Chuckatuck Creek. 
When you see the big red cigarette barn on the right, the next stoplight is 32/258. 
If you go straight on Rt. 17, and then through a 90º curve to the right, you will see the James River Bridge. You've gone too far! 

Turn left onto Brewers Neck Blvd (32/258). You will be headed West, toward Smithfield. 

After approximately 2.8 miles, you will come to a T-intersection with Hwy 10/32. 

Follow directions from Benn's Church, below. 

 

>From Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel

Follow US-17S/US-258W/VA-32W across the M&M. 

After a 90º curve to the left, you will arrive at a stoplight where US-258 and Hwy 32 split from US-17. 

At that intersection, turn right onto Brewers Neck Blvd (32/258). You will be headed West, toward Smithfield. 

After approximately 2.8 miles, you will come to a T-intersection with Hwys 10/32. 

Follow directions from Benn's Church, below. 

 

>From Northern and Western Suffolk

Follow Hwy 10W/32E (Godwin Blvd, then Benn's Church Blvd) to the intersection with US-258. 

Follow directions from Benn's Church, below. 

 

>From Benn's Church

>From US-17, turn right onto Hwy 10 West. From Hwy 10, go straight to continue on Hwy 10 West. 
Signs will read 10W/258S, and Hwy 32 turns off in the other direction). 

After approx. 2 miles, go straight to take the Bypass around Smithfield. 
After you go under an overpass, you will lose US-258. 
The Smithfield bypass is about 8 miles long. 

Continue on Hwy 10 West toward Surry, VA, a total of approx. 21.8 miles from Benn's Church.

>From Isle of Wight

>From Isle of Wight, follow US-258 East to its intersection with Hwy 10. 

Follow directions from Smithfield, below. 

 

 

>From Smithfield

Make your best way to Hwy 10, northwest of Smithfield. 

Follow Hwy 10 West to the Township of Surry, VA. 
You will go through the towns of Rushmere and Poolsville, past Bacon's Castle, and past the turn-off for Chippokes. 

Follow directions from Surry, below. 

 

>From Surry

Make your best way to the intersection of Hwys 10 and 31 in Surry. See Map #4. 

If you are coming west on Hwy 10, Hwy 10 takes a left turn in Surry at a yellow flashing light, and becomes Hwy 10/31. Make a left at the flashing light.

Go approx. 2 miles on 10/31 then bear right onto Hwy 10 West.

Go 8.4 miles on Hwy 10 West. There is a sign for IdleWild Camp on the right hand side of the road. The entrance for SkyAnchor is on the left side of the road at that sign.  

Follow directions from the SkyAnchor Entrance, below.

 

>From the SkyAnchor Entrance

Go about 1/10th of a mile and make a right. Follow the dirt road around to the main building and Troll. (Signs will be posted.)

 

>From Richmond, Northern VA, and points West and North

Make your best way to I-95 South or I-64 West, then to the I-295 bypass southeast of Richmond. Take Exit 15 (Hopewell) and turn East. 
(Alternately, take I-95 south of Richmond to Exit 61. Turn East onto Hwy 10 toward Hopewell and pass under I-295 after approximately 3 miles.) 

Follow Hwy 10 East into and through Hopewell.

>From Hopewell

You are less than an hour away from SkyAnchor! 

Continue on Hwy 10 East. 
You will follow Highway 10 as its name changes from Randolph Rd, James River Dr, and Colonial Trail. 
You will pass through the towns of Garysville and Burrowsville.  Look for the Junction of 611. There is a United Methodist church on the right; it has a reddish colored roof.

About 6.miles after the Junction of 611, you will see the Idlewild Camp Sign on the left side of the road. The entrance to SkyAnchor is on the right side across from the sign.

>From Areas Southwest of Richmond

Find your best way to US-460 East, US-58 East, I-85 North, or I-95 North. 

On US-460, go east until it intersects with I-85, then north on I-85, south on I-95, and north on I-295 (Richmond bypass) 

On US-58, go east until it intersects with either I-85 or I-95, then follow one of the next 2 steps. 

On I-85, go north on I-85, then south on I-95, and north on I-295 (Richmond bypass) 

On I-95, go north on I-95, then north on I-295 (Richmond bypass) 

>From I-295, take exit 3 for US-460 East. 

Follow directions from Petersburg, below. 

 

>From Petersburg

Find your best way to the intersection of I-295 and US-460 East (exit 3). 

Follow US-460 East to Waverly. 
After about 6 miles, you will pass through Disputanta, and after another 10 miles, you will arrive in Waverly. 

At Waverly, turn left onto Hwy 40 East. 

Follow directions from Waverly, below. 

 

>From Waverly

Find your best way to the intersection of US-460 and Hwy 40. 

Follow Hwy 40 East to Spring Grove, about 11 miles. 
After about 7 miles, you will pass through Savedge, and after another 3 or 4 miles, you will arrive in Spring Grove. 

At Spring Grove, Turn Left onto Hwy 10 West

Less than a mile there is a sign for IdleWild Camp on the right hand side of the road. The entrance for SkyAnchor is on the left side of the road at that sign.

Follow directions from SkyAnchor Entrance. 

 

>From Spring Grove

Find your best way to the intersection of Hwys 40 and 10. 

Turn Left onto Hwy 10 West

Less than a mile there is a sign for IdleWild Camp on the right hand side of the road. The entrance for SkyAnchor is on the left side of the road at that sign.

Follow directions from SkyAnchor Entrance. 

>From Southern Chesapeake and Virginia Beach (Alternative B)

Take I-64 East, I-264 West, I-664 South, or Military Highway South to their intersection in western Chesapeake with US-58 and US-460. 

Follow the signs for US-58/460 West. 
This is a confusing interchange - be careful and stay alert. 

Follow US-58/460 past the Chesapeake airport, Weigh Station, and to the Bypass around Suffolk. 

Follow directions from Suffolk, below. 

>From Southern Suffolk and Western Chesapeake

Make your best way to the US-58 Bypass around Suffolk. 

Take the exit for US-460 West to Wakefield. 
You will pass through Windsor and Zuni. 

At Wakefield, turn right onto Main Street. 

Follow directions from Wakefield, below. 

>From Wakefield

If necessary, use US-460 to get to Highway 31 in Wakefield. You are less than 45 minutes from SkyAnchor. 

In Wakefield, turn north onto Main St. 

After about 0.4 miles, follow Highway 31 North as it makes a left turn. 

Continue on Hwy 31 North 6 miles through the town of Dendron and another 8 miles until you see the signs for Hwy 10 West.

Turn left onto Hwy 10 West.

Go 8.4 miles on Hwy 10 West. There is a sign for IdleWild Camp on the right hand side of the road. The entrance for SkyAnchor is on the left side of the road at that sign.  

Follow directions from the SkyAnchor Entrance.

 

>From Norfolk (Option C), the Peninsula, and the Northern Neck

If necessary, make your best way to Hwy 33 or US-17, then to I-64 anywhere east of I-295 (Richmond bypass). 

Take I-64 toward Williamsburg. 

>From southeast of Williamsburg, take exit 242A (Route 199 West). Stay on Rt 199 for about 6 miles to the 4th traffic light, and turn left onto Hwy 31 (Jamestown Road). 

>From northwest of Williamsburg, take exit 234 and turn right onto Route 199 East. Stay on Rt 199 for about 7 or 8 miles to the 2nd traffic light, and turn right onto Hwy 31 (Jamestown Road). 

Follow Hwy 31 to the end, which is the Jamestown/Scotland ferry. Catch the ferry to the other side of the river.

Jamestown/Scotland Ferry Landing

The Jamestown/Scotland (Surry) Ferry operates 24-hours-a-day with ferries leaving both sides at intervals from 30 to 60 minutes. The ride takes 15 minutes, is free, and has a height restriction of 12½'. (When looking at the ferry schedule in the fall, winter, and spring, use the 2 left columns only.)

When the ferry lands, you will be less than 20 minutes from SkyAnchor. 

After getting off the ferry, follow Highway 31 (Rolfe Hwy) until it reaches Surry.

Follow directions from Surry.

 

>From North & South Carolina, Georgia, the I-85 and I-95 corridors, and Emporia.

Make your best way to I-95 near the southern Virginia border near or north of Emporia. 

Follow I-95 North until you are about 16 miles south of Petersburg. 

Take Exit 31 (Stony Creek, Hwy 40). 

Go East on Hwy 40 East. 
You will pass through Sussex, and cross Hwy 35 at Homeville. 

Follow directions from Homeville, below. 

 

>From Courtland, Homeville

If necessary, take US-58 to Hwy 35 North, until it intersects with Hwy 40 in Homeville. Turn right onto Hwy 40E. 

After about 8 miles, you will go through Waverly, VA, crossing US-460. 

Approximately 11 miles later, you will arrive in Spring Grove, VA.
