For those that missed my earlier workshop at Beltane Brouhaha and did not know the class was going to be different, then you are in for a special treat. Come to tonight's Drum Circle and you will have the opportunity to attend this class.
For those that normally come to Drum circle, this will be a return to back to basics of drumming with a new twist. How to chant and drum at the same time. This is not an easy thing to learn but once mastered will provide many pieces we can share with others. It is kinda of akin to patting you head, rubbing your belly while marching and whistling the star spangled banner while at the same time. Now don't be scared. I wil teach you how to break it down. With enough practice anyone can do this. During the first lesson on this, half the class were able to do at least 2 rhythms and chant while drumming. This is primitive drumming and chanting. so come see what it is about!!
Intro to Drumming & Chanting Workshop
Class information:
This is a introduction to hand drumming and chanting using rhythms from a
firedance songbook created from www.firedance.org. Here you will learn
basic hand drumming techniques. This will include basic
exercises to train your body and mind, how to produce different sounds on a
drum, and learning to break down rhythms so to make them easier to master.
This will also include advice on how to play in a group and good drumming
etiquette. You will leave this class with a better sense of drumming and
rhythms, and how to play in a group. Class time will last approximately 2
hours with a break in the middle.
Drum Circle Information
I co - lead a drum Circle the 2nd Saturday of the month at 7:30 pm. The
drum circle is located at the Piedmont Unitarian Universalist Church
(www.puuc.org). It is a social time where one can drum, talk. eat and share
something of themselves.
The first one was a workshop in Introduction to drumming. It gave us a base
for drumming and helped establish how to play well in a group. Second Drum
Circle was a social time of storytelling and teaching drumming. The third
drum
circle was still more teaching and socializing. The amount of rhythms we
have learned and played help to establish a good base. The group is starting
to play well and is forming friendships and connection through music. The
fourth session was interesting. We experimented with soul singing and dance
as well as refreshing what we have learned.
No one has to be a expert drummer. I want to encourage everyone to come drum
no matter what ability. All you have to have is a desire to drum and a
snack to much on. Come feel the rhythm of life and drum with us. You are
invited.
