Subject: [charlesbury] Novice Tourney: A&S Competitions

Greetings unto the populace of the Barony of Sacred Stone! As most of you
know, 'Novice Tourney: Challenge of the Phoenix' will be held in Elkin, NC
on April 23-25 (http://acorn.atlantia.sca.org/0404/phoenix.htm). In
addition to the martial aspect of this event, The Arts and Sciences will be
promoted as well. There are several competitions planned for the event, so
being your creativity and enter that which suits thee!

The competitions are as follows:
Baroness Susanna von Schweissguth is sponsoring a PERIOD ENCAMPMENT
competition. Details/judging criteria for which may be found at
http://sacredstone.atlantia.sca.org/novicecamp04.htm. For concerns not
addressed there please contact her excellency directly at
needleznpinz at charter.net

Lady Seraphina is sponsoring both a Best Display and Most Creative Display
competition. The intent of this competition is to get folks thinking more
about how they're presenting items into competition or display at the higher
levels. When they're competing for attention with lots of other really nice
entries, they need to stand out somehow. A great display will do just that
by bringing folks to the table and then encouraging them to stay and learn a
little about the item/s being displayed.
Extra points for displays that conserve space and will pack and travel
well to events! Space is always at a premium, both in your vehicle (or your
friend's car!) and in the A&S display area. Think about this as you're
coming up with your display. (This element not required, but strongly
encouraged!)

BEST DISPLAY: The most attractive and comprehensive display. The
display should complement the item being shown, without overwhelming it. If
there is documentation, it should also be included in the presentation in
such a way that it is easily read and/or thumbed through, for those that
want to learn more about what you're doing.

MOST CREATIVE DISPLAY: Can be same as above, but with flair, to
attract attention across a room. Use your imagination on this one, to come
up with something that the judges won't soon forget. Small battlefield
models of how a trebuchet works, for instance, complete with a diorama or
landscape board, showing how it would be aimed, launched, and how many of
the enemy it would take out. Or it could be as simple as making a
wonderfully outlandish period hat to display your hand-cast hat pins.

Use your imagination, but use discretion. The goal is to attract the
right attention! Remember that the more elegant and period minded your
display is, the better it will be in the minds of those who care about such
things! So while neon purple might attract attention, it's probably not the
kind you really want! For concerns not addressed here, please contact Lady
Seraphina directly at seraphina at charter.net

Lord Wolfram von Taus will be sponsoring a MEAD competition. As the brewing
and wine making arts are rarely seen at smaller events, it is my wish to
further encourage them. We have a broad knowledge and interest base in this
Barony, both on a personal and social level. I would like to match up these
good gentles and fuel their interests!
As far as the judging criteria for this competition is concerned, I
have decided to keep things on the simpler side to encourage novices. The
focus will therefore be primarily on the product itself. As always, extra
points will be awarded for period recipes and documentation, but they are
not mandatory. For questions or concerns please contact me directly at
lordwolfram at hotmail.com.

Baron Achbar ibn Ali will be sponsoring a HERALDIC DISPLAY competition.
This one is pretty self-explanatory. As with the Mead competition, the
spirit of this competition is to bring this arts into the forefront of the
public eye and into more events and extra points will be therefore be
awarded for documentation, but it is not mandatory. If your arms have
passed, you already have most or your research and documentation, just
present it in a "less dry" format and gain some extra credit! For questions
or concerns please contact Baron Achbar directly at achbar at bellsouth.net.

As usual, there will be an open A&S display for those with works that don't
fit into any of this event's specific competitions. The Baronial MoAS
Office will also be awarding a prize for Best Documentation for A&S entries.

Please forward this e-mail to any lists or individuals you think it
applicable to. Thank you!

YIS,

Lord Wolfram von Taus
