The Barony of Storvik
Novice Tourney, July 16-18, 2004

May the populace of the Barony of Storvik pay heed. Herein does Her
Excellency, Baroness Johanna von Sudeborn call the Atlantian Cavalry to her
lands, to discover who among them, wouldst be the finest Novice Rider.
All gentles intending to ride either rental or private horses MUST
pre-register no later than July 12th, 2004 (this means that the registration
form plus the proper fundage must be in the Marshal in Charge of the Horse’s
hands BY July 12th. No Exceptions please).
Please note that all persons riding must be authorized riders in the
Kingdom of Atlantia or be prepared to complete the authorization process. Be
prepared to show the MOL a current blue SCA membership card upon arrival or
sign a waiver of liability and pay the extra dollar to the MOL. All persons
wishing
to participate in the SCA equestrian games, both as a rider and as ground
crew, MUST authorize.
As per SCA regulations, no person under the age of 5 may be on a horse
at any time. Riders 12 and over can ride at this event, however, there is
extra paperwork that must be signed before the event date and the legal
guardian of the minor child must watch the child ride during the entire time
that the child is on a horse. Parents or guardians interested in having a
minor child ride must contact the Equestrian Marshal-in-charge before July
12th to facilitate processing the proper paperwork. Parents or guardians
must provide an ASTM or Snell Equestrian riding helmet for the child as none
are provided at the site.
Rider authorizations consist of taking the Safety class, filling out
the paperwork with the MOL to include current SCA blue membership card or
waiver of liability and $5.00, and an authorization ride. Non-rider
authorizations consist of taking the Safety class, and filling out the
paperwork with the MOL to include current SCA blue membership card or waiver
of liability and $5.00. There is an additional $1.00 fee for those without
the blue card for processing the waiver of liability, paid to the MOL.

5:00 pm Horses loaded and off site.

Rules to follow:
No smoking or alcohol in area where horses are present.
Stalls for horses must be left clean, both on site and at boarding facility.
Anyone engaging in unsafe practices or using punishment deemed inappropriate
will not be allowed to participate.
Horses must be attended by an adult at all times.

On a side note: While horses are very large animals, the area that riders
sit on is not the strongest portion of the horse. Horses subjected to
carrying too much weight for their size are permanently damaged and will be
in pain for the rest of their lives. If renting a horse, please let the
Marshal in Charge of the Horse know your weight. Most horses can carry
approximately 275 lbs. Please understand that this rule is for humanitarian
purposes.

What to wear: closed toed footwear (riding boots are not required but more
comfortable), pants without large seams in the inside or riding breeches,
approved riding helmets are suggested but not required for adults, nothing
dangly, or
easily caught on pieces of harness. No spurs on rental horses.

What to bring: The games arena is located away from the main site. No water
is available at the games arena. Day pavilions can be set up in the games
area for the comfort of the populace. Banners and other decorations for the
games arena are encouraged. Bring chairs, and other creature comforts you
require. Suntan lotion and bug spray would also be a good idea.

The SCA Equestrian Games:
Tilting at the Quintain: the quintain is a T-shaped piece of equipment set
half way down a straight run. The rider has two passes down a straight line
to strike the quintain with their lance. As the quintain is struck, it will
rotate around in a circle. The total number of rotations is the rider’s
score.

Tilting at Rings: the rings of different sizes are attached to a T-shaped
piece of equipment set down a straight run. The rider has two passes with
their lance to attempt to put rings on their lance. The rider’s score is
judged on the size of rings they were able to put on their lance.

Behead the Saracen: similar to pole bending but with a head placed upon
each pole. The rider must weave down between the poles, attempting to knock
each head off the pole with a short sword. At the end of the first pass,
the rider comes back to the start line in a straight line. The number of
heads knocked down during the one pass plus the best time determines the
rider’s score.

Pig Sticking: carrying a spear, the rider has two passes in which to pick
up a “pig” with the end of the spear. Score will be based on how many
“pigs” are picked up.

Please note: loaner lances will be available at the event but must be
shared. Display of personal arms on banners, tabards, horse decorations,
etc.
is encouraged. Please inquire in advance about any decorations for the
rental horses.

Registration form: Must be in the EMIC’s hands by July 12th. Each person
registering MUST fill out a separate form. Riders using rental horses or
private horses use the same form.

Small Print: Private horses MUST present proof of negative Coggins test
before being unloaded from trailer at boarding facility or at site. Horses
from outside Maryland must also present a current Health certificate.
Marshal in Charge of the Horse must be notified in advance of estimated
arrival time for private horses at boarding facility or at site. Horses may
be tied to trailers at the site but must have adult supervision at all
times. Private horses will be housed overnight in a barn one mile from the
site for $20.00 (Friday and Saturday). Games arena has no place to tie
horses therefore pole corrals are encouraged. The SCA does not allow
electric or wire corrals on site. Please bring all feed and equipment
necessary including buckets for water and feed. Water is available at the
games area on site. And Buckets and forks for clean-up.

Stallions and known kickers or biters are not allowed.

already.

Horses can be shared: Please let the Marshal in Charge of the Horse know if
you
would like to share a rental horse. The SCA has specific parameters on how
many riders each horse can carry per day. The Marshal of the Horse will be
able to arrange appropriate partners for you on your rental horse.

Suggested guidleines for number of riders per horse:
Walk - up to four riders per day for this event.
Trot – up to three riders per day for this event.
Canter – up to two riders per day for this event.

This means that beginner and intermediate riders sharing a rental horse pay
$40.00 per day and advanced riders pay $60.00 per day. The EMIC will inform
you
Of how much you need to pay, what horse you will likely be riding and who to
make the Money order out to.The exact horse you ride may change on the day
of the event when we know exactly how many horses are actually on-site.

Stall Rental money orders should be made out to: Flying Change Farms,Inc.
Cash will also be accepted for stall rental. Stall rental is NOT paid to the
Marshal in Charge of the Horse. Stall rental is due upon arrival at Flying
Change Farms, Inc.
