Sure, those running the event have the right to
arrange it as they like. And I don't have a
complaint with any one event.
But I am noting a trend at Kingdom events for
competitions to be so narrow that you might wait
years for one that fits your work. Open displays or
"pearl's prize tourney" type activities seem to be
almost nil. If your work takes a long time to
produce, or your research takes a lot of lead time
(mine usually involves ILL, so tack on 6-8 weeks onto
any project), you have no forum for your stuff. Not
being a norman who knits salt cellars in the shape of
heraldic beasts, I am sort of out of luck for this
event's A&S. Small, local events are not likely to
have the expertise to provide feedback, or worse, the
experts there are the very ones who helped you with
your project to start with.

So, I could put my hat, dated 1293 at the earliest,
in a tempore atlantia competion for 1000-1250 and just
mark it display only??? Or I could put the islamic
hat in a Norman clothing competition (after all, there
were islamic folk living in norman sicily - is that
too much of a stretch????) and mark it display only?
Or I could take the museum gift shop approach...hats
VERY SIMILAR to this one were made in the years
1000-1250 (this is a valid argument which I could
document, but it is hard to ignore that the actual one
that I copied was later than that)....
Or I could wait four more months (made the hat this
summer) until Spring Coronation when we hit the
right time period for my hat. I don't require instant
gratification, but having to wait 8 - 12 months for my
time period to come up seems a bit much. If I have to
work that weekend, do I have to wait another year?
Maybe there will be an open
display at University in February or Kingdom A&S in
March?
I could sponsor a competition in a topic of interest
to me, or even an open competition. I usually end up
running or otherwise involved in the Sapphire A&S.
But then, of course, I couldn't enter it myself, so my
poor hat would still be at home in a ziplock bag.
Or I could just wear the hat with the documentation
hanging around my neck on a string and a big sign on
my back that says "Honk if you think this hat is
cool.".
Am I the only one holding onto an A&S display item
and not finding a forum for it? I just want to find
like minded folk to swap interests with and get some
feedback. Don't need wealth or international acclaim
or even my name read out in court. A few tokens or
encouraging words would do. One other person doing
Middle Eastern research or a textile freak who wants
to stop and talk would make the whole trip worthwhile
for me.
