As a former resident of Southwestern PA, I have traveled 68 and 79 extensively from Maryland to north of Pittsburgh. It will add time to your travelling, so please plan accordingly. Cumberland, MD on 68 is roughly 90 minutes to the WV/PA state line. Slippery Rock is approx. 2 hours from the WV/PA state line on 79. Do be aware that if your vehicles are heavily loaded, traveling across the mountains on 68 may be slow as some of the slopes are a bit steep for heavy vehicles.

There should be little obstrusive construction on 79 through PA. I do know that they are redoing one exit in Washington, PA, but with little delays. And you basically bypass Pittsburgh.

One side note if you are considering this route, the 68-79 interchange and surrounding exits may be busy in Morgantown, WV during the two weeks of Pennsic. West Virginia University students will be returning to town to start fall semester.

Hope this is helpful, and not too confusing!
