when i lived in Fayetteville, i drove to Greensboro,
followed 40 to Winston-Salem, took 52 to Mount Airy,
and dodged across to I77 (now available by I74). I77
aparently becomes 64 now and goes into Charleston, WV.
then it is a long haul up I79 to Pennsic. the section
of 77 in West Virginia is both mountainous and a toll
road. i drove the route up through that particular
neck of the woods a lot because i was dating someone
at Virginia Tech, which, from Fayetteville, is mostly
the same route. it seemed that all of the Fayetteville
types went to Pennsic the same route.
Rand McNally recommends the I95 corridor through DC
instead of the WV route from Fayetteville. since
avoiding the hell that is DC traffic on a friday
evening, there is a super secret ninja Caer Mear
secret route that i will share with you as long as you
promise to keep it a secret.
once you get north of the Rappahanock river, just
north of Fredericksburk, VA on I95, take 17N and stay
on it until you get to I66W.
take I66W until you get to I81 N, going to Winchester.
Immediatley south of Winchester there is a bypass,
route 37. take that, and look for 522, which goes to
Berkely Springs, WV. it also continues on to Hancock,
MD, and connects to I70.
continue north on I70 until you get to Breezewood. PA
turnpike West until they force you through a toll
plaza, and then get off at the first exit after the
toll plaza.
take I79N for about 30 miles. exit 99, turn left,
follow the signs for Coopers Lake Campground.
If you don't have a good road atlas, get one at
Wall-Mart. the combo atlas/store directory is only
about $6. you can check out the route with that.
remember, you are sworn to secrecy.
