[MR] Q about period banners

Hello everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has documentation for period
banners being made in the shape of a shield, rather
than some variety of square/rectangle/pennant. I can't
think of any, but don't want to make some Grand
Statement (wink) in my documentation without doing
some more checking! 

Related note, there are two very spiff 16th C Spanish
velvet banners I've come across recently--one can be
viewed online at the site for the Cincinnati art
museum, and the other one is illustrated in the
catalog of textiles at the Art Institute of Chicago. 
Too cool...
