Posted on behalf of Lady Taria no Akiyo:

Did you know that the current Atlantian Royal Brewer had a non-alcoholic as one
of his entries? Did you also know that he will be one of the judges at the
Youth Non-Alcoholic Brewing competition at Lochmere’s Night of the Fools this
Saturday?

In addition to the traditional brewing competition being held at Lochmere's
Night of the Fools (April 16-18 at Elks Camp Barrett
http://acorn.atlantia.sca.org/0404/fools.htm), I will be sponsoring a youth non-
alcoholic brewing competition. There will be two age related categories: 12 and
below, and 13 to 18. So, any school aged youth is welcome to participate.
Documentation for the 12 and below group will be counted as bonus points,
whereas the judging sheets for the 13 to 18 year olds will include
documentation in the total score. Please include a list of ingredients with
each entry, which will count towards documentation, so that the judges can
evaluate them accordingly.

Some wonderful non-alcoholic recipes for syrups can be found in Cariadoc’s
Miscellany at
http://www.daviddfriedman.com/Medieval/miscellany_pdf/Misc9recipes.pdf
Syrup of Sekanjibin, which is served diluted at many events, is just sugar and
vinegar boiled down into thick syrup. All the non-alcoholic syrups listed in
the Miscellany should take less than an hour to make, depending upon the volume
that you’re making.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the competition, want a copy
of the judging forms, or would like some help getting started. Taira no Akiyo
(mka Tylar Umeno), tumeno1 at umbc.edu, (410) 636-5522 (please NLT 9pm). Thank you
very much and happy brewing.

In service,
Akiyo
Chancellor Minor, Lochmere
