Another that is in some ways in the middle of a series (but in others the
first of the series -- most of the action occurs chronologically before the
remainder of the series, but it is in the middle of the series from the
point of view of the main characters) is Escape Velocity, by Christopher
Stasheff (from the Warlock In Spite of Himself series). It is in the
future from our perspective and in the past from the perspective of the
main characters and deals with a reenactment society obviously based on the
SCA.
