Greetings Fellow Atlantians,
I apologize for interrupting the current debate but, as some of you
may have noticed interspersed among the authenticity debate e-mails, two
families of our SCAdian cousins out in Caid have lost everything to the
fires that are currently occurring there...and several more are still in
danger. One of the suggestions made on the CaidAssist e-list that was
started to help them was that those of us who live too far away to
deliver goods to help them out can help out by sending gift cards to
places like Home Depot, JoAnn Fabrics, Target, Borders Books & Music,
Wal-Mart, or Barnes & Noble (yes, I asked and they have all of these
stores out there). I think that this is an excellent idea. (I know
that a place like Borders Books & Music may seem silly when these people
have lost everything but, so far, their basic needs are being taken care
of and all of the families have children who may be cheered up in some
small way by being able to replace a favorite book or CD.)
As a Society, we are not allowed to make donations to individuals.
However, as individuals ourselves, we can make donations to them out of
the goodness of our hearts. I would like to start a collection of
either money to buy gift cards or gift cards themselves from INDIVIDUALS
who would like to donate to help out our SCAdian cousins who have been
so devastated. I am planning to be at Crown this weekend and will, most
likely, be on the field waterbearing...please feel free to find me
there. I may also be at Dun Carraig's Investiture and the Nov 9th Melee
practice - both depending on when my sister decides to give birth. :-)
Also, please feel free to contact me in any other way, as well (contact
information provided below).
On of the things I love so much about the SCA is how much like a
family we are...no matter how much we bicker we're always there for each
other in times of need. I have already seen such generosity on the
CaidAssist list and I think it would be wonderful if we could add to
that so that our cousins may start re-building their lives. I will
include the names of everyone who donates when I send out the package
(and your "home group," if provided). Thank you all so much for
listening to me and I apologize again for the interruption.
