Ok, I can't help myself anymore.....
When I first started (in college), I decided to go to my first event 2 days
before the event. I went to the mall and bought a neon mulitcolored rayon
hankerchief skirt that was on clearance. I wore it with a silk poet shirt
from my closet. I dragged 6 friends along with cuz I wasn't going to go
camping alone with "wierd people".
I had the time of my life. I was scared of the guy in armor with the
flaming skulls on their chest (now my household warlord). I adored all the
people in garb, all the *stuff* for sale, the amazing feast cooked outdoors
which I at with my fingers cuz I didn't have any feast gear. I was scared
to death with I was asked to go in front of the king during feast - greasy
fingers and all.
I didn't know a thing about the reseach the SCA did. I didn't know a thing
about how to do it right. But I was so warmly accepted by the local group
that I kept going and helped build the local colligium back up from nothing
(along with some of the folks I dragged along to the event).
Maybe it was college enthusium and energy. Maybe is was my need as a
theatrical costumer to actually WEAR a costume instead of just making them.
But I didn't make anything for myself until 2 months later. And then I wore
the same kirtle for 2 years to every event.
I'm still learning. In the last 2 years or so, I've really started to
"care" about the research and making it the right way - instead of making a
costume (which is a totally different topic). I have a few more choices of
things to wear, but some of it was due to necessity (pregnancy will do that
to you).
Yes, I have cotton t-tunics that I wear in camp over sweats. Yes, I am
working on the pattern and documentation for a hand sewn 1530's German dress
- hopfully finished before retirement. Yes, I sit in coleman chairs at
events and put my daughter in a playpen. No, I do not have a pavalion.
I love the SCA family. They have helped me move many times, been friends
for me when I needed a friend, gave me something to complain about when I
needed to complain.
I am not offended by eye glasses, but I make special comments to those who
choose to buy period looking ones. I am not offended by igloo coolers, but
the guy with the box for his is just cool. Maybe I can do that instead of
covering mine with a tablecloth some day.
I've prattled on enought. But for me, the best thing about the SCA are her
people and their friendship.
