[MR] Macrame . . . Period?

OK, I confess. I am old enough to remember when Macrame was cool. I still
remember how to tie most of the knots.
Recently, perhaps as part of the bell-bottom fashion revival, I saw some
Macrame hanging planters for sale. Gave me quite a flashback, it did.
I remember, way back when, that Macrame books would confidently proclaim
that it was old, old, old. Chinese and Turkish sailors, rug fringes, etc.
But, they never gave any specifics.
I have also noticed that among all the many fiber arts you find in the SCA,
including some that are really much later than our time period, you NEVER
see any Macrame. Is it just because it is utterly out of fashion? Or
utterly out of period?
