What you have experienced in real life is the true SCA.  This list is a
forum where SCAdians tend to express themselves with a more modern veneer,
which is to say more forthrightly and less elaborately genteely, than they
do at events.  In two words, it is more casual and frank than our general
comportment at events, where most of us attempt to behave more formally in
observation of a more period ambience.  So please don't take anything here
as indicative of what you'll experience at an event.  Consider this a place
where we let our hair down and speak perhaps too bluntly so that we can
avoid doing so when we're trying to have fun in a more period way.

One thing which should bode well for your assurance of acceptance at an
event is how tenaciously so many Atlantians here are arguing for a policy of
acceptance rather than one of exclusion.  If we have indeed stepped onto a
slippery slope of exclusivity, it is only with one big toe so far, and so
many people have expressed such a strong distaste at the prospect of skiing
further down that it seems inevitable that some future monarch will retract
that toe and repeal the law.
