My, how we do wander.  As I recall, the original post that's triggered 
this firestorm was about covering up blatantly out of period items (or 
better yet, avoiding them).  I don't know about most of the people on 
the list, but it's hard to tell cotton from linen at point-blank 
distance for me, let alone 2-3 feet or more.   I know some of the sewers 
can probably identify it at about 2 miles, but.... I don't think I've 
heard anyone seriously entertaining the idea that if it were not 
generally available in period, use of it would constitute a violation of 
the rule of an attempt at period clothing.
