The problem with references to cloth is that some terms have changed over the
years. Cotton has been referred to as "tree-wool" in some accounts, adding
to the confusion.

Fustian was a cotton fabric in a twill weave with a fine silky nap. In the
later 15th century and (presumably) onwards, fustian cloth from Naples was
cheap enough to be a common fabric for workmen's doublets. I think I read
somewhere that there is no modern equivalent of fustian, but I think a soft twill
cotton comes close.

Of course, this is not a justification for the finer cotton weaves.

Do not be ashamed of your cotton twill doublets!
