[MR] cotton

In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Knights of Saint
John had statutes where their comandaries from all
over Europe had to send cloth to the Holy Land for the
care of the poor as well as the brothers and sisters
working in Jerusalem.

At least two of the comanderies (both in Italy I
believe) had to send large quantities of cotton twill
fabric for use as coverlets and for clothing.

Cottom was rare, but it was out there, it was
available, and it was worn.
