[MR] In defense of inauthenticity

I have to agree with Hrothgar here. I don't think spats look better than a
regular boot that looks as if it is made with period materials. I actually
like the new rules, they have motivated me to upgrade my kit. (Though I had
already replaced t-shirts with period looking shirts and I always covered my
plastic breastplate with a tunic, so I had less to do than some.) But the
shoes are giving me fits. I just spent a lot on good, safe, supportive and
not terribly modern looking boots, and I hate that I have to retire them so
soon.

Ummm, the shoes that I've been wearing to fight in for the past three or
four years are black nylon and leather. I'm fairly certain that no one could
tell the difference at five feet, much less ten, between them and a pair
which were all leather. I'm fully in support of covering blatantly
non-period items that take away from the ambiance at events, but the banning
of all non leather shoes is wee bit extreme. I switched to the Hi-techs
because they are a safer shoe to fight in than my boots. Better traction,
better arch support, and better ankle support. Outlawing them would be a
mistake.
