Pardon me for suggesting two period guidelines as possible governing principles
to these debates and practices:

1: From Aquinas (lifted from Aristotle, a thoroughly period practice): All virtues are
a median between two related extremes, both vices.

2: From Augustine: From each according to his means; to each according to his needs.
