There are, actually, extant examples of what we consider cross-stitch; 
however, it is not "counted" cross-stitch like we are used to.

I'm not an expert on embroidery (and no, I don't play
one on TV).  But from what I understand, medieval
cross stitch is very different from modern cross
stitch in that the crosses *overlap*.  You see this
both in the Egyptian examples, as well as in the
examples from medieval Spain.
