[MR] brocade questions

Well after perusing a bunch of websites about brocade,
maybe we should start with a definition. I think of
brocade as a weaving technique where the raised,
colorfull pattern is mostly not visible from the back.
I am seeing the word used pretty generically as
"weaving with lots of color", even being used on one
SCA site interchangeably with tapestry weaving
(help!?!), so obviously the web is not going to help
and going through my textile books is mostly coming up
with the word lampas instead of brocade and yes,
Jacquard lived in the early 1800's, so...help. What
do you guys think brocade is?
