Yes, cross stitch is period. It is seen in western
european embroideries from at least the early 16th
century. From even earlier (15th century) there are
western european examples of long-armed cross stitch.

Of course, this doesn't mean you should go and
decorate a viking tunic in cross stitch! ;-)
