ive seen your kit and you are not far off apollonia. come down to charlotte
for one of my practices (wed nights) or get in touch with me to arrange a
weekend and i will make sure that your kit passes. i have plenty of stuff
here to take care of it and my weekends are all free.

but i will correct you on one thing in your post. if the sca is not going
to be a living history group and decides to go the way of "anything as long
as its easy for me" then it needs to change its stated position. from the
sca.org web site you will find the april 2003 revision of the organizational
handbook. go to page 7 and read the entirety of the "a brief introduction
to the society for creative anachronism" section. in it clearly states
(second paragraph) that the sca is indeed a living history group. further
it defines its activities as "aspects of the life and culture of the landed
nobility in Europe prior to 1600 CE." it further defines its purpose by
stating "The dress, pastimes, and above all the chivalric ideals of the
period serve to unify our events and activities." i have copied the first
two paragraphs below.

but somewhere in that purpose tennis shoes, plastic barrels and coleman
chairs fit? rewrite it or follow it, i see very little else that makes
sense. covering items up tastefully to disguise them requires so little.
your example is one that others should follow instead of the vitriolic way
some have defended the idea of ignoring the rules for the sake of their own
convenience. and i agree with you, i havent felt like there has been a lot
of jumping on any one person. although some of that has happened im an easy
target so its kinda expected. 8^)

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE SOCIETY FOR CREATIVE ANACHRONISM
The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. (SCA, Society) is a nonprofit
educational organization devoted to study of the Middle Ages and
Renaissance. Most of its activities take place in the context of a social
structure adapted from the forms of the European Middle Ages, which allows
participants to take a first-hand look at various aspects of the life,
culture and technology of the times under study.

As a living history group, the Society provides an environment in which
members can recreate various aspects of the culture and technology of the
period, as well as doing more traditional historical research. We sponsor
events such as tournaments and feasts where members dress in clothing styles
worn in the middle Ages and Renaissance, and participate in activities based
on the civil and martial skills of the period. These activities recreate
aspects of the life and culture of the landed nobility in Europe prior to
1600 CE. The dress, pastimes, and above all the chivalric ideals of the
period serve to unify our events and activities.

I don't think anyone was ganging up on any one; it seems more like a debate
to me, and one that has happened many times before, whether on this list or
on others.

The fact is, the SCA is not a living history group, and it probably won't
ever be; living history groups focus on a very small chunk of time and
place, and the SCA does not.

You won't find a English Civil War group sitting down to tea with an
American Civil War group, yet in the SCA you find Norsemen gone a vyking
sitting down to a meal with Elizabethan privateers.

If fighting was my first love, I would probably be most of the way to a list
legal kit by now. But it's not, A & S comes before that. And I realize
that it will be awhile before I can legally enter the list under the new
laws, even though I am authorized. But that is the law, and I will follow
it.

I can only push myself, and those who ask me for help towards the ultimate
goal of being more authentic.

When I think about all the stuff that I still need to add to my stuff, to be
more authentic, I tell myself that it is a journey, and one that will take
awhile.
