It is with reservation that I broach this subject, but as a new SCA member, I thought it might be pertinent to the subject.
The people with whom I have come in contact have been quick to offer suggestions, even strongly pressing the appearance issue at times. This is something I sought and was happy for the members' candor. Such "appearance" remarks included disquising coolers and chairs, even if draped, so the mundanities are obstructed at events.
Prior to E-mail list approval, it might be worth considering to have E-mail list requests be filtered through a Chatelaine so the newcomers get "canned" E-mails exposing them to the hows and whos of the Kingdom. Certainly not want to stifle any enthusiasm, one would hope that the reason anyone gets involved does it because of the purpose, not to play dress-up. Of course, we cannot require everyone take a newcomers class, but is there some incentive/award we can provide for those who do?
Make it a point to recommend the newcomers information on the SCA web site. Ansteorra provides an indepth view at http://www.ansteorra.org/regnum/hospitaler/articles/fip.htm. It is a tremendous resource for begininners and a good refresher for those who may need reminding of how it can be done well.
Authenticity comes with time, teaching and experience. Efforts should be made toward that end if one is not able until then.
Graciously,
Alexandra
