I never understood the whole question of "why do you bother?". That's like
asking someone who joined a soccer game why they bother running up and down
the field when they could just stand around and drink Gatorade.

Dressing correctly for your persona when you leave camp isn't an extra
bother; it is the point of the game. (Or one of them.) Why bother learning
recorder when you can just play a CD? I know Pennsic is unique in that it
has a significant population of people who are there for their own reasons;
not everyone at Pennsic is even in the SCA or pretends to be. But at the
biggest event in the world, we should be trying the hardest to be spiff. And
at Kingdom and local events, the assumption is that everyone is there to be
in the SCA environment. Being in garb, using period containers, putting your
watch or cell phone or radio in a pouch or bag isn't the extra mile, it's
the price of being in the game in the first place.

And Daria, it mattered to the people who saw you. To see you out there in
your "day Elizabethan" serving us water made the battle feel a little more
real. These things COUNT, even if you never realize what you are doing for
the people who see you.
