And you might consider Osage Orange.  AKA Bois d'Arc; Bodark; Horse
Apple - Maclura pomifera.

Notice the Bois d'Arc moniker....  Early French traders in the New World called it that, or 'wood of bow'  

Admittedly the wood is not period to the Old World.  But it may be the best wood available to you.





 Hickory, loses > limb power over time.    Good woods for bows of course one is yew (oregon, and english),
