[MR] yeoman archery

Your hopes shouldn't be completely dashed, efforts are being made towards
that possibility here in Atlantia, although they are progressing deliberately.

As Baron Sir Otto has recently posted, they have had Heavy, as well as
Light, archers in the last several (2 or 3 at least) Pennsics. Heavy
archers were allowed to draw and use backup weapons, and demand a full
contact kill.

In the typical Pennsic setup, Atlantian Archers would be either Medium or
Light archers, as we do not have experience in taking full shot
kills. However, those archers who were willing and able to armor up
completely have been operating under a royal dispensation to act as a Heavy
archer at Pennsic.

I, myself, did, although it didn't make a difference (either never got
engaged, or got killed by opposing arrow fire...damn arche...oh, wait).

Given that by next Pennsic, Atlantian archers will be required to armor up
to full standards (save the archer gauntlets on the hands), I would not be
surprised if there were more folks wishing to take advantage of that
dispensation next year, if the Crowns will make it.

In addition, there is an ongoing experiement at those melee events which
allow it to perform Yeoman archery. As it is an experiment, it is heavily
regulated, and I would discourage a new combat archer from worrying about
it until they have more experience (unless he/she already had extensive
Heavy weapons experience at least).

If you are interested, there is a Yahoo Group, called Atlantian-Yeoman,
where we discuss the experiment in more detail. I would encourage you (or
anyone interested) to come on over and check it out.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Atlantian-Yeomen/ (the list has been somewhat
quiet of late as we're in the winter not-so-many-melee's season).

In Service,
