Not by that name, of course. The word "golem" is Yiddish, and the tale of
Der Golem is about Rabbi Loewe of Prague, who lived in the 18th century. Der
Golem is a creature made of clay, animated by Rabbi Loewe to protect the
Jewish ghetto of Prague by inscribing the Hebrew word for truth, "Emeth",
into its forehead. When it runs amok, he destroys it by erasing the first
character, changing the word to "Mot", which means "death".
