My understanding is that the term "Troll" comes from an event at which the 
gatekeeper was actually stationed beneath a bridge.  I believe the way in to the 
event site was by passing under the bridge. The story of the troll under the 
bridge, period or not, was well enough known that someone picked up on it, and 
also on the idea of collecting a toll, that is a fee for passage, and the 
term was coined.  Someone more knowledgeable in the ancient lore (I only go back 
to AS VIII) would have to confirm or deny this, or supply details, but this is 
to the best of my knowledge and recollection.  The term was known and 
established when I became active.
