They said "Wow, that William Marshall is an amazingly hoopy frood."  
Oops, wrong milieu.

William Marshall was just such a fighter.  At one tourney fairly early 
in his career he missed the post tourney festivities as he was at the 
smithy having his helm reshaped so he could get it off.

Remember, in the earlier period tourneys the goal was to beat your 
opponent senseless and capture him.  If you couldn't knock him out or 
ring his bell, what you called him was 'the victor' and the minstrels 
sang the praises of his puissance.
