Because that's not something they typically hear as
the enter the site.

I'm right there with you. But my worry is what I've
seen not what is appropriate. What I've seen is more
excuses at nagging from people that don't know the
ones they're nagging very well. And more excuses to
shout "correct" terms in court at someone making
announcements.
I want authenticity actually. I don't think words are
horrid but silly. But I worry about how we approach
it.
This is part of why you see such an objection to
changing words here - the dread of encouraged finger
wagging and obnoxious behavior towards those that
moved in. In this case, an increased chance that this
finger wagging would happen towards newcomers,
especially those that just moved here.
