[MR] New name for Troll

Why is it that some in the SCA make seem that people looking to use
realistic terms or who wear realistic gard are not fun? I do living history
for a few diffrent eras and I can tell that the reason I like living history
better is because the people are fun and don't get in a huff when change is
suggested. I go authintic as possible in the SCA and anyone who knows me can
tell you I am a lot of fun. I only do the SCA to have a good time with a big
group of freinds who are in it. Yes I dress authintic and joke around, gee
imagine that. I also don't thread count people or blast them for not being
authintic.

Back to the topic at hand, changing troll to porter and o crate to stewart
are great suggestions and it would remove some of the element that the SCA
gets made fun of for doing.

"Go see the porter to check in" sounds cool and would be fun to me.

Good Gentles,

I really think, for the sake of my stress level, I'm going to have to quit
reading the Merry Rose. On the other hand, a part of me thinks I should
continue, so that I'll know who it is that's trying to spoil what I like
about the SCA.

I, personally, think our little quirks of language are one of the things
that make the SCA fun. I happen to like the terms Troll and Dragon, but
then, I'm not trying to BE Briana. However, I like to think she has a sense
of humor too (I assume humor is Period?). I think we can go too far with the
schtick, but I'd concentrate more on discouraging the blue and orange hair
and body piercings than on a few Society-wide non-period words.

Why don't we work more on encouraging the Dream - chivalry, courtesy and
honor - instead of on what we call the person who checks you in at an event?

That, along with the friendships, and yes, even the quirky phrases, were
what drew me to the SCA. I'm here to have fun with my friends, and learn a
bit about medieval history and culture along the way.

Sorry. I guess I'm not playing the same game as some of the rest of you. At
least I recognize that it's a game.

In service to the Dream,
Lady Briana Maklucas
Barony of Stierbach
