[MR] Seeking Mantling Ideas

The simplest mantle is a trapezoidal shape, the top
measurement equal to the size of the helmet from the
edge of the grill around the back to the other edge.
The length of the mantle is personal prefference, but
long enough to rest on the upper back when the helm is
worn seems to be common. Attach this to a torse and
wear on the helm. The torse is a tube of fabric,
roughly the diameter of your thumb, long enough to go
all the way around the helm. You can also wrap the
torse in a second contrasting color. I have also seen
some torses made by braiding. The mantle can be made
more elaborate by making it in two colors, and dagging
the hem. Multiple layers of mantle work well also,
with the bottom layer being larger and longer and each
layer on top of that being done slightly smaller and
in contrasting colors. If you want a crest, consider
something in paper machie' from the craft store,
painted gold, then washed with a thinned mixture of
dark brown paint and water to bring out highlights.
Attach this to the torse with leather cord or such to
sit right at the top of the helm. This would of course
be for pas etc. then removed for combat. I have seen
this done with an angel cherub, a goblet, and a deer.
A good craft store like Michaels should have a fair
assortment, and christmas time is a good time to find
the deer. On that note, if anyone knows a good place
to find an eagle and or lion...I am looking. I dont
feel quite talented enough to sculpt my own griffon
crest!
