This happens, no matter what. For example, if you're
brand new to the SCA and you show up at an event,
how do you know to ask for Troll? You ask "where
do I pay my money" and someone says "The troll
is over there" or "The porter is over there".

Or perhaps...

You've been in the SCA for a while and you move out
to the West Kingdom. Someone points you to the
"eric". Do you have any idea what they are talking
about? (BTW - they mean the list field). So if you're
not sure, you ask.

So you're at an event and you ask for troll. Someone
local says "The porter is over there. That's where
you check in". How does that cause any harm or
scare people away?

The term used doesn't cause the discouragement
or discourtesy, it's how folks react to it.

And how folks make a mountain out of a shadow. :-/
