Greetings,
Speaking as both a Chirurgeon and a former backpacking
instructor, I'd like to add one thought that is being over looked. Every
individuals resilience and stamina is slightly different. Not everyone gets
cramps from drinking ice water, especially if that's part of their well
established routine, however conversely it's true that it will make some
people nauseous and give them stomach cramps. So for myself as a waterbearer,
I try to advise people of the temperature of the water so they can decide for
them selves. They've lived in their body much longer and know it much better
then I. The important issue is to keep the headaches and heat related
illnesses away, so that they can stay on the field as long as they wish.
Ducking someone who is overheated in cold water is another
matter entirely. There is the potential for the person to be thrown into
shock or in extreme cases, develop a cardiac problem. Gradual cooling, using
cool water and damp rags to the armpits, neck and groin have proven time and
again to be more effective in actually keeping the patient comfortable and
dropping the core temperature safely. The only time rapid cooling is called
for medically, is when the patient is showing signs of mental deterioration
and is no longer venting their bodies through sweating.
