Your Excellency,
I have awaited your reply to my last missive, but I
can wait no longer. It would be a grave disservice to
this town if these words reached eyes other than your
own, but I must act now, and can wait no longer.
Events are moving apace, and for better or worse I
must risk this letter.
The Spaniards, never ones to miss an opportunity for
mischief, have been spotted in the hills around
Smeewick. I think perhaps they were stranded here when
we beat off the last of the Spanish attacks last
Spring. There can't be many of them, but I fear they
will cause us trouble.
So far, the two households have restrained themselves.
The winter in this region was hard, and there was
plenty of work to tire out the men and women of
Smeewick. Spring comes though, and with the beauty of
nature reborn the spirit of man awakes. I am certain
that with this new season will come fresh blood.
Already the colors of the two households, purple and
green, are on proud display around the city. I have
spoken with both Countess Aryanna and Countess
Mary-Grace, and each has assured me that they would
not start any violence. I worry though what their
various henchmen and household members will do.
In regards to those mysterious visitors I spoke of
before, I have introduced myself to them. They are
Master Robert and Mistress Isobel. They have not as of
yet told me their purpose for being in town. Indeed
they have been quite circumspect on the matter. There
are rumors though, that they represent the crown in
some way, and whoever has their favor, may have the
favor of the crown.
I await your guidance, Your Excellency. I believe that
already the events of the day have left my control. I
have increased the number of guards for the town, but
between the purple, the green, the Spaniards and these
odd visitors, I feel they will be of little use.
I hope to hear from you soon. I fear that by Easter,
this will all have played itself out, and there will
be blood again in the streets of Smeewick.
Lord Kynnyth Pyke
Mayor of Smeewick
