Piracy was a scourge to practically every body of water large
enough to float a raft until the development of the modern
navies. I've got plenty of resources on piracy in the English
Channel, conveniently located at:

Braudel's _The Mediterranean_ has sections on piracy in that sea,
and, in general, any good and honest history of the major
seafaring nations will cover piracy.
