Pardon me for not having any of my primary sources at my fingertips.

In the broadest definition of piracy, groups of people making a "living" by
using ships to steal valuables from other ships, it starts as soon as
transporting valuables by water starts.  The Egyptians had problems with
pirates
on the Nile and the Greeks and Romans had problems with pirates in the
Mediterranean.  To this day, there are still some small numbers of pirates
in
places like the Caribbean.

Now, if you're asking about Errol Flynn style piracy, it's not period.  The
clearest discrepancy, to me, is the broad side cannonades on the ships.
T'aint
period.  Pre-renaissance shipping is much simpler.  It's not surprising,
since
shipbuilding has always been a cutting-edge-technology field, that ship
building
changes dramatically in the renaissance.

It's interesting to remember that Columbus is period.  We can assume that he
picked his ships from amongst the best available.  Though, I'd love to know
if
there were better ships he left behind for lack of funding, and what those
ships
were like.  My point, however, is that one can get a good idea of what ships
at
the end of the fifteenth century looked like by looking at the Nina, Pinta,
and
Santa Maria.

I  have done research, and cannot for the life of me find out......Where in
Pre-1600, to which the SCA is ALL about, has there EVER been Piarates?
Please
help me with this. Im lost.
